Understanding Granite Tile

Homeowners all over have made the choice to use a beautiful but practical natural stone for their interior and exterior projects. Granite is a prime choice because of its versatile look and durability.

This natural stone is formed over thousands of years deep inside the earth. It is created by the extreme heat and pressure that is placed on it over a certain amount of time. This stone is classified as igneous rock because it was developed due to pressure applied to liquid magna that was located between other rock layers. Once this heated material cools, it forms granite layers deep inside the earth.

Granite is rock that is unified or integrated with elements such as mica, feldspar and quartz. The slow cooling process of suspended mineral elements inside the liquid magma gives granite its crystalline look and hard durability.

Before granite can be placed inside your home, it has to be removed from the ground. This removal process is called cutting. The stone is cut into manageable sized blocks which can later be cut down into slabs with the use of diamond, sand and aluminum oxide type saws. It has to go through several stages before it gets to your home.

The next stage is stone calibration, gauging and polishing. Once these last few processes are completed, the stone is ready to be shipped out for sale. These granite tiles and slabs will most commonly be used for kitchen and outdoor areas of the home. Some of the other pieces that are to small to use as tiles will be used in products such as coasters, fireplace items and even cutting boards.

Granite stone is durable and heat resistant, but even with these benefits, it is susceptible to damage. One of the first things to do is to make sure you are sealing your granite properly with a good granite sealer. This will act as a protective coating for your natural stone surface. You will also want to use a stone safe granite cleaner when you have a mess to clean up. Last but not least, if your granite is starting to look dull, consider using a stone safe granite conditioner. There are a lot of products out there, make sure you are using one that is designed with your type of stone in mind.

If you come across damage that you cannot repair or take care of yourself, remember to contact a stone care professional. They should be an expert in their industry and provide a 100% service guarantee. It helps to know that your service provider also understands stone safe products and has been in business for a substantial amount of time.
